We opened our first young coconut today! It was hilarious! At first my boyfriend wanted to throw it on the ground to open it and I caught him just in time! We got onto YouTube and watched a tutorial. After that it was easy. We don't have a cleaver but a large knife was just fine. We scraped out the meat in one scoop with a rubber spatula and poured it along with the water into the blender and made a smoothie. Yum!! I discovered on one of my assorted fruit and vegetable hunting trips that the local Asian markets have young coconut for a dollar and change, whereas Whole Foods had them for almost $5! Ouch! We buy most of our fruits and vegetables in the International District in Seattle because there is a wide variety and low prices. I hope this helps anyone looking for young coconut! Ciao!

You should goto India :) I am in India right now and I pay 10 us cents for a coconut :) THey open it and then even cut it open once you are done drinking the water ;) I love it, wish everyone could be here to experience. In the main markets or just on the side of the road they have coconut stands to buy and drink young coconuts! it is heaven. :)
