Is soy milk healthy for you?
If we could all just believe what we have read or what are friends tell us, certainly following a healthy diet would be a lot easier. Black and white, good and bad, right and wrong.
Where there is money to be found in the promoting of information, one must be cynical. If you hear anyone tell you that a particular product is good for you, you must ask yourself who this person is, and what they have to gain from telling you this. If you see that there is money to be gained behind this plugging, think twice about what you believe. After all, the humble apple has but one self-promoting line, and how many people get rich from apples? Not many.
But how many people get rich from Soy?
And how many people lose out?
The answer to both questions is many as the industry of Soy is one in which many corporations have invested a lot of money. It is also an industry for which much precious land has been destroyed, but that another issue for another day.
And so, with the knowledge that many people earn BIG amounts of money through Soy, we must question this implication that Soy is the alternative?
Soy Healthy in comparison to what?
We must discuss here about our health, with an air of cynicism, exactly what we are being told about Soy.
In a very informative brochure, published by WestonaPrice.org (http://www.westonaprice.org/brochures/SoyAlertTrifold.pdf the writer opens the first paragraph introducing the already controversial issue of the birth control pill. Many women fear the consumption of the pill, seeing it as unnatural and with such a strong affect on the body, it makes us uneasy. Why open a booklet about Soy with the mention of the birth control pill?
Because Soy has such a high content of estrogen, that babies fed on with healthy Soymilk, ingest the amount of estrogen contained within 5 tablets of the pill...daily.
Messages such as the above don't generally sail into the normal family camp.
We are more used to the claims such as healthy Soy milk is good for your heart. Soy milk can ease the discomforts of menopause, and People of Japan and China are healthier over all because of their regular consumption of healthy Soy products.
Well, don't we all buy into this?
We do, up until after making great efforts to adapt to a healthier lifestyle, we don't feel so healthy after all. So was the experience of Mary Vance, author of "The Dark Side of Soy" (http://www.utne.com/issues/2007_142/features/12607-1.html), who, like so many of us, made all the efforts and reaped none of the benefits. Vance found herself moody, bloated, and with a complete lack of menstruation. Naturally, one should not blame a particular food group without knowing the facts. And so she did her research, and found much contrasting information. Interesting nuggets of knowledge did crop up, in large amounts. To name but one, consumption of Soy ingredients can lead to endocrine disruption, digestive problems and have negative affects on the thyroid, fertility, hormone levels, sex drive; all symptoms against which Vance found herself.
Kaayla Daniel, author of "The Whole Soy Story", in an interview with Terrain Magazine (http://www.ecologycenter.org/terrain/article.php?id=13579) mentions The Israeli Health Ministry issued an advisory that babies should not get Soy formula or Sory ingredients, and that children to age 18 should eat Soy or Soy ingredients no more than once per day, three times per week maximum. Adults should exercise caution due to the adverse effects on fertility and increased breast cancer risk with soy related ingredients.
Rather a different message from the one that we hear so loudly from the TV, from magazines, from each other. But it is the type of message above that we should be listening to, that a nation has decided to caution it's people against large consumption of Soy.
Folks, the stories and people arguing against the consumption of Soy are out there. We don't have money invested in the avoidance of Soy, and so, perhaps, we lack the same ability to shout quite as loud as the large corporations. But with the increasing number of people realizing that Soy does not benefit their particular body, the message is getting louder.
This article does not serve to tell you what is or what is not healthy.
It's not necessary, because we are now being told so many contraindications that we no longer know who to believe. And so, in that same mind set, I bid you to explore the idea that perhaps big companies, with millions of dollars invested in Soy are NOT looking out for your health, and alas, nor is Soy.
