The Natural lemon PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Well, it may seem unfair to choose some natural foods over others. If it's natural and raw, you can be assured that it will do you good (though to every rule there is an exception). However, biased as it may be, there are some foods that we simply must call 'super'.

To get into the category of 'super foods', although there is no deciding committee, a food must tick quite a few boxes.

Surprisingly, and conveniently, the humble lemon does exactly that.

Well, it is necessary to start this article by saying that lemons are readily available at all times of the year, in all parts of the world, at the price of a bus ride. (Hey, save your bus money, walk where you want to go, and buy lemons with your change left over. You'll be feeling great in a week!)

Onto the facts...

s everyone already knows, lemons are abundant in vitamin C.

Most people will get plenty of vitamin C without trying, and so, perhaps we take this vitamin for granted. However, we should give credit where due; vitamin C aids anti-cancer activity, can enhance the immune function, may strengthen the heart against heart disease and may decrease risk of cataracts, amongst other things.

Lemons have digestive stimulating abilities, and hence will relieve heartburn, indigestion, excessive gas and can successfully cure diarrhea and constipation.

Lemons also boast electromagnetic 'powers'. Scientifically speaking, like digestive juices which the body makes, lemons are anionic. All other foods are the opposite, cationic. Lemons are the only foods that are anionic.

In short, this is good.

This means that although lemon juice is an acid, within the body it is alkaline.

An alkaline body is a healthy body, one in which disease cannot survive.

Lemon juice can be used to make raw fish and raw meat safe to eat.

'Ceviche', a raw fish dish which originates from Peru and Chile is a delicious way to eat raw fish. Raw fish has amazing health benefits but without some sort of safety measures being taken, one cannot eat it fresh from the market. Marinating the fish in lemon juice is akin to cooking fish, rendering it safe to eat, but allowing the consumer to retain all the benefits of eating raw fish.

Lemons have a very low calorific value and contain calcium, phosphorus, iron, small amounts of vitamin B complex, and of course, plenty of vitamin C.

Suggestions for adding lemons to your diet:

One should try to add two lemons daily to your diet.

This is not hard to do.

Upon waking, make yourself some refreshing lemonade.

Juice one lemon, add it to a liter of water and some honey or agave nectar.

Make a delicious and easy salad dressing by mixing juice of half a lemon to a dash of olive oil and a sprinkling of herbs and pepper.

Prepare yourself ceviche. You'll get the benefits of the lemon and the fish.

Make a simple fruit salad of nectarines, banana and peach. Then make a syrup to pour over it of lemon juice and honey.
